The English language is universal. 20% of the world speaks this language and it’s particularly important in Pakistan. We have an English medium education system as well as Urdu medium, however, due to English not being our first language, it takes a lot more effort to become fluent.
Since schools have been closed since February, many children would have lost command over English since they generally don’t get to practice it at home. However, with so much free time on their hands, they can use this time effectively to improve their fluency and their vocabulary.
Here are some effective ways to improve your English speaking and writing (appropriate for all ages):
Read more books
Reading is the single most effective way to get accustomed to the language. The more you read, the more styles of writing you’re exposed to and the more your vocabulary increases. Reading books is also a fun way to kill time, you get to learn more, and enjoy an interesting story while improving your language skills.
When reading a book, make sure you note down all the new words you come across. Keep a separate notebook where you practice your English skills. Whatever new word you come across in the book, note it down and look up its meaning. Write down its meaning and try using these new words in your vocabulary. Write sentences with the word in, or use in it conversation.
Watch informational shows in that language
With Netflix coming to Pakistan, we now have access to thousands of shows, documentaries, and movies. Most of these shows are in English, and if not, they are dubbed in English for our convenience. Watch informative shows that use correct grammar and a good vocabulary. Generally documentaries are the most informative. When watching such shows, note down any words you don’t understand or haven’t come across before. Looking up the meanings of such words will improve your vocabulary.
*We do advise parents to ensure their underage children are watching age-appropriate content.
Take online classes
Since institutions that offer such courses have been ordered to close down due to COVID-19, sign up for online English language classes. In such classes you’re able to learn with the class and be guided by an instructor too. The instructor can correct any mistakes and help you improve your command over the language by recommending better words to get your message across.
Begin journaling
Writing the English language is as important as being able to speak it. Written English is more formal and makes use of punctuation which can take some time to perfect. Begin journaling in order to improve your English writing skills. Journaling is when you write about your day, your emotions, any goals you have thought about, etc.
